Matty Brabham wins 1st Race Matthew Brabham kick started his racing career with his first win at Round 1 of the Victorian State Championship held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit today. Driving his CAMS Rising Star / Minda Motorsports Spectrum Brabham fought off his competitors to win the final race by just 0.0516 in dramatic style. Brabham who had qualified 3rd on Saturday, had a 3rd, 5th and a 1st in the three races to take the overall win, and now takes a 5 point lead in the Victorian Championship to the next round at the Sandown circuit on May 23rd. He also posted the fastest lap of the day in the final race. “It was an awesome day of racing, in all the races you never knew who was going to win until the flag fell, but the most important race is the last one as it counts for more points in the Championship and it was a very special feeling for me to get my first win”. Matthew enthused after. Brabham’s week end was not without a few problems, a malfunctioning electronic handbrake made the starts very difficult in the first two races, and a trip through the grass in the second race all added up to a 5th place start in the final race. The final was a real battle and the 4 leading drivers put on a real show for the fans with constant lead changes and daring passes. The final lap was anybodies race but Brabham managed to get to the flag first and score a memorable win. “The team did a great job today, we fixed my problem with the starts and the last setup change made the car the fastest it had been all week end. In fact I my fastest lap in race 3 was quicker than my qualifying lap. So a big thanks to them and to my sponsors for their support for making all this possible”. Matthew said.
Matthew’s next race is Round 2 of the National Formula Ford
Championship on May 2nd at Qld Raceway.
